About the story

Gem, an orphaned firefly adopted by grasshopper parents, wants the only thing in the world that she can’t have. Desperate to fit in, she wants to turn her glow off.  Growing up in a grasshopper village on a tropical island, she’s bullied and teased for her light at school.  Her parents enlist the help of a beloved village elder to help Gem learn to use her light and teach her how to become a bright, strong firefly.

Secretly, she wants to turn off her glow forever. But when her classmates are in grave danger, Gem’s the only one who can save them. She faces the choice of becoming her true self or running away from the only home she’s ever known.

The first in the Gem’s Island Adventures series, this story brings themes of belonging, owning your light, and learning from our elders – timeless lessons of the human experience – to young listeners.

Note to parents

This chapter of the young hero’s journey rings true for many of us, right? The loners, outcasts, weirdos, artists, and creators of the world. It’s about becoming who only you are meant to be. And it’s about growing up with lessons of failure, perfectionism, fear, diversity, belonging and so much more. Exposure to mental health tools at a young age can equip children to not only accept their uniqueness but embrace their differences as the superpowers that they are. This story touches on heartwarming poignant themes of diversity, adoption, nontraditional family models, and more.

I’ve been trained in NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) to facilitate subconscious shifts. This book uses guiding, persuasive language based on behavioral psychology and communication principles to help rewire negative subconscious stories that start for many of us at a young age.
